Plan Ahead
International Relocations take time and planning. The average Transit time is between 6-9 weeks depending on the destination. It is customary to have a mover scheduled 4-5 weeks before your target move date. The summer months June, July & August are traditionally the busiest moving months. If you can schedule your relocation during the Fall/Winter the service level may be higher.
     

Get Multiple Quotes
Like many service oriented industries, the saying, “you get what you pay for” is true in the moving business. Get at least 3 quotations for your relocation and don’t automatically choose based on the lowest quotation. All companies have different ways to calculate and route overseas shipments. Make sure you understand what you are paying for because once a company has possession of your shipment it is very difficult to renegotiate.
     

Be Realistic
  • It’s very difficult to project an exact delivery date for a shipment; Movers quote ESTIMATED transit times.
  • Shipping Lines have been slow to adapt to changes in technology, it can be difficult to get up to the minute status and changes made.
  • Ships often don’t sail on the date that they are expected.
  • Freight gets delayed due to strikes, weather & unforeseen circumstances throughout the world.
  • Customs procedures constantly change and delays are common

    Research Your Destination Country
    Contact the Consulate and Embassy for information on Taxes, Duties & Restricted Items.

    Ask for customs forms & regulations regarding special circumstances such as inheritance, 2nd home status, expatriate imports, etc.

    Hire someone you Trust
    Moving overseas is very stressful and emotional. Make sure you trust the Company that you hire to move your shipment. Check them out through the Better Business Bureau or through local associations. Ask for references and ask many questions.
